Invest in earning productive assets first before consumption assets like the house. It should be that wealth production is likened to farming and or planting seeds. What you own should grow. Investment should grow. So residential properties, cars, even gold are assets that are not functional or useful to productive undertaking. A car depreciates by at least 20% the moment it leaves the showroom Avoid investing in toys for the Big Boys. It was a mistake being enamored to the lure of cars: speed and good looks.
Invest in stuff that grows and produces money: contributing to sales, and /or reducing costs and expenses.
Thus comparing a genset and solar panels - which one would you choose. Solar of course. It reduces costs and generate revenue (if you are in net metering) beginning day one
